Located on the slopes of Mount Agung is Besakih Temple, the most important and sacred of all Hindus temples located in Bali. Referred to as the Mother Temple, this holy place contains over 80 individual temples, some which are around a thousand years old which makes it very unique. Besakih Temple is known widely for being the centre of Balinese Hinduism, which represents the island’s religious and cultural identity. It is the temple dedicated to the Hindu trinity: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva with the central Pura Penataran Agung as the most forte and respected sanctuary. The temple complex remarkably survived the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963, which is considered a natural disaster. The sacred site was spared while the surrounding area suffered severely.

Besakih Temple can be best experienced during the Balinese festivals of Galungan or Kuningan. The ceremonies and offerings made at the temple during those times are a sight to behold. A sarong and sash should be worn as a show of respect, and hiring a local guide is recommended in order to fully appreciate the temple. This is the most beautiful temple in Bali and visiting early in the morning is encouraged as most of the crowds arrive later in the day.
